After over a decade of coaching people to achieve each and every one of their Quran goals, I can safely say that there are two main reasons people struggle with their Quran studies from the outset.

The first is that they don’t have the daily Quran habit locked in place. The second is that those who do have the habit of studying the Quran for a few minutes each day, don’t know exactly what to do during that precious time.

In this short article, I’m going to tell you exactly what to do to get the biggest return on the time and energy you invest into the Quran.

There are 10 steps to achieving each one of your Quran goals. Instead of aiming to become an expert in each one of these 10 things, which could take hundreds or even thousands of hours (depending on which step), my recommendation is to study the Quran using each one of these 10 methods until you get to a point where you are competent ‘enough’ at each skill, that you’re safe to move on to the next one.

Typically for a lot of these goals, it will only take about 20 hours to become very competent at that skill. For some goal, it might take a little bit longer.

For example, Quranic Arabic will be more like 80 hours.

Here are the 10 steps that give you the most logical way to organise your Quran studies. Only move onto the next step, after completing the one before it. If you’ve already done a step, move on to the next one:

Step #1 – Read the Biography of the Prophet (pbuh), in English

Step #2 – Read the English Translation of the Quran – from cover to cover.

Step #3 – Learn to Recite (Pronounce) the Arabic Script in 2 weeks.

Step #4 – Learn the Essentials of Religion (including the belief system and how to wash, pray, fast, etc.)

Step #5 – Increase Recitation Fluency and Speed

Step #6 – Improve Tajweed (Recitation Accuracy) – to the point that you’re not making any mistakes that change the meaning of what you recite.

Step #7 – Learn Quranic Arabic to the point where you understand 80% of what you read

Step #8 – The Quranic Arabic Assimilation Method – this gets to understand 100% of what you ready, easily and enjoyably

Step #9 – Go through a comprehensive tafsir (exegesis) of the Quran

Step #10 – Memorize The Quran – using powerful memorization techniques

I’ve found that our Quran studies become a lot more effective and efficient and organized if we complete each of these 10 steps in order before moving on to the next one.

If you follow them in detail in exactly the way I layout in the Quran For Busy People Program, for most people, it will take less than a year to get to the point where you fully understand the Quran in Arabic, are reciting it accurately and beautifully, and are ready to start diving into memorizing the Quran and doing a deep, detailed study of tafsir.

If you want specific advice on the best resources and the best way to achieve each goal, and want to know the exact point at which you’ve done ‘enough’ of each step that you’re ready to move on to the next one, check out the Quran For Busy People program.
